T he Catalan region and culture make for a very special atmosphere and charm – unmistakably Spanish, yet unique. The Catalan coast is stunning and varied. In the north of the region the Costa Brava, or ' wild coast', keeps its popular main resorts restricted to a few small pockets, leaving an otherwise wonderful stretch of unspoilt beaches backed either by farm land or by steep, wooded hills, all interspersed with pretty villages. Further south, you can experience the excitement and sophistication of vibrant Barcelona and the lively resorts and long beaches of the Costa Dorada. Be sure to explore Spain's traditional interior too. There is a lot more to Catalonia than just its beaches and there is more history, heritage and culture to be investigated throughout the region's towns, villages and countryside than can be fitted in to one visit. BarcelonaCatalonia's exuberant capital has many outstanding art museums and transcendent modernist architecture such as Gaudí's Sagrada Familia alongside the high quality shopping areas. The long street known as La Rambla is also a big favourite with visitors to the region. Cadaquésis considered by many as the most picturesque coastal village of Catalonia. Narrow pedestrian streets with some great shops and restaurants wind up the hillside and around the beautiful harbour. Lovely at any time; best seen in the evening. You can also visit the artist Salvador Dalí's house in this village. FigueresVisit surrealist maestro Salvador Dalí's bizarre museum. You can't miss it – the walls are covered in croissants and topped with giant eggs. Some of Dalí's most bizarre work is also exhibited inside. THINGS TO SEE AND DO One way is to go from Portsmouth to Bilbao or Plymouth to Santander and then across northern Spain. Or, from the western channel ports, keep to the west of France until Bordeaux, then turn east to cross the border near Perpignan. From Calais, go via Reims to join the A6 at Beaune to avoid Paris. The shortest way is around Paris to the A71 then the A20 to Toulouse or the toll- free A75 to Montpellier. These are also much quieter than either the A6/ A7 or the A10. BEST WAY TO GET THERE Montserratand its monastery Just 50 kilometres north- west of Barcelona is the " serrated mountain". The drive around and up the sierra is impressive enough, but the view from the monastery village clinging to the mountainside is the icing on the cake. For those so inclined, the monks' haunting chants can be heard within the church several times throughout the day and make for a peaceful and reflective journey's end up the mountain. Tamariu, Llafranc and Calella de Palafrugell Three relaxed little beach towns south of Cadaqués that are especially nice to visit in low season.
