The region is just drenched in history, beautiful farming country and its accompanying delicious regional produce. The families that now play and sunbathe on Normandy's glorious long, beautiful beaches make an uplifting contrast to the thought- provoking sites and memorials of D- Day, the greatest seaborne invasion in history, on 6 June 1944. But this close neighbour is also bound up with another invasion in British history, back in 1066, when William the Conqueror sailed in the opposite direction and irrevocably into the fabric of our own country. The rich Norman countryside soon reveals how it produces its wonderful cheeses, Calvados and cider. Lush green fields, orchards, hedgerows, winding lanes and tiny picturesque hamlets make up the bocage– the green, hedge- lined countryside, reminiscent of some parts of England. So close to home, yet so indisputably French, Normandy is well worth a visit at any time of year. Normandy access via the A16 and A28 motorways; and St. Malo, from where you can quickly join the A84 near Avranches. You are spoilt for choice for getting to Normandy, with the ports of Le Havre, Caen and Cherbourg delivering visitors straight into the heart of the region. Add to these options Calais, with quick BEST WAY TO GET THERE BayeuxA picturesque and historic town, overlooked by the Notre- Dame Cathedral and home to the world- famous Bayeux Tapestry, that depicts the Norman Conquest in exquisite detail. Caen Peace MemorialNot a war museum but a museum for peace. Follow the history of conflicts throughout the 20th century, be carried along by the excellent interpretive displays and leave with much to think about. THINGS TO SEE AND DODeauvilleVery popular with wealthy Parisians, and home to the racecourse and a famous casino. Well worth a visit, as is its close neighbour Trouville. HonfleurThe bustling, beautiful old harbour is ample reward for braving the high season crowds, or for a more leisurely low season visit. ArromanchesA little seaside town, full of souvenir shops, restaurants and bars. Still on the beach and in the bay are the remains of the artificial Mulberry harbour, towed across by the Allies just after D- Day. Cité de la MerCherbourg's great museum, housed in the former Transatlantic Maritime Station and including the retired submarine Redoutable. RouenCapital of Lower Normandy and an architectural delight. Excellent shops and restaurants, plus the Musée des Beaux Arts. D- Daybeaches, memorials and landing sites. Too numerous to list and where you may still meet visiting veterans, especially around 6 June. 2008 is also the 65th anniversary of the D- Day landings. © . A. Mauxion - CDT Manche © V.
