In St. Nazaire you stay for three nights at the 3- star Express by Holiday Inn. The hotel has a lift, lounge area with bar and breakfast room and all bedrooms have T. V. and telephone. You will then stay for one night in the Caen area at a minimum 2- star hotel. YOUR ITINERARY DAY1Local departure then onwards to the Rouen area for two nights. DAY2Operation Jubilee( included). We spend the day in the Dieppe area, studying ' Operation Jubilee' where three VC's were to be awarded. This was the ill- fated practice for D- Day, involving the Commandos and the 2nd Canadian Division. We study the Commando aspect of the raid. Continue to the beach and seafront areas where the Allied Armour came to grief. On Green Beach we talk about the raid within a raid. We also visit the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Dieppe where many of the fallen from the raid are buried. B DAY3We leave Rouen and travel to St. Nazaire for a three- night stay. B DAY4Operation Chariot ( included). We spend the day in the St. Nazaire area, studying ' Operation Chariot' - ' The Greatest Raid Of All' - where five VC's were to be awarded. As well as looking at the Combined Operations aspect of the raid, it is an ideal location to talk about the Atlantic War, involving some of the surface raiders and U- Boats, both of which were to use St. Nazaire. Visiting the Dock area and bunkers in the area. B DAY5Lorient and the U- Boat Pens( included). We visit the U- Boat Pens at Lorient, seeing the vast Keroman submarine base. B DAY6Normandy( included). We travel to the Caen area in Normandy. We will look at some of the Commando/ Ranger input to D- Day, 6th June 1944, visiting sights including Point du Hoc, where the American Rangers stormed the cliffs with just 225 men to disable the big guns which could have caused havoc to the shipping off Omaha and Utah beaches. We then take a look at some of the activities of the 1st and 4th British Special Service Brigades, who were to support the landings on the British and Canadian beaches - thus enabling the Infantry and Armoured Brigades to move towards their main D- Day objectives. B DAY7To Calais, and return home. B Included Meals: B= Breakfast The Greatest Raid of All O n May 10th 1940, German troops invaded the Low Countries and France. Just less than one month later some 380,000 British and French troops had been evacuated from the Channel ports - and Britain braced itself for an invasion. Winston Churchill, within days, was decrying the defensive habits, and demanding that a raiding force should be formed, ' specially trained troops of the hunter class, who can develop a reign of terror'. The Commandos were formed. Later, the Americans, using the same formula would form the Rangers. During two years, more than 50,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers fell on battlefields like Anzio, Cassino, Salerno and the Sangro. Join us on this new fly- tour to look at these key battle sites. YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1We fly into Rome and travel to Cassino, where we stay for the next seven nights. D DAY2Salerno & Caserta ( included). We start the tour at Salerno, where British forces landed in 1943. We see the beach-head, and the Roman Ruins where the Americans fought. We visit Salerno War Cemetery, seeing the grave of the great-grandson of the Duke of Wellington, and the many press correspondents who served with broadcaster Alan Whicker. Lunchtime in Salerno. In the afternoon we drive past Mount Vesuvius and visit the war cemeteries in Naples and Caserta. B, D DAY3Monte Cassino ( included). In Cassino we visit the Cassino War Cemetery and Cassino Memorial to the Missing. We include a visit to the excellent Historiale Di Cassino multi- media museum, where lunch is also included, and then in the afternoon we travel up to the abbey and Polish War Cemetery. We also visit the German War Cemetery at Caira. B, L, D DAY4Hill 593, Snakeshead Ridge & the Liri Valley ( included). We continue with our look at Monte- Cassino with a specially arranged visit to Hill 593 and Snakeshead Ridge, where much of the actual fighting took place. Please note this will involve some walking. We also walk down to Albaneta Farm and the wreck of a Sherman Tank, now a memorial to Polish troops. After lunch we look at the fighting along the Rapido and in the Liri Valley, seeing the Herts & Beds Memorial, the memorial bells by the Rapido River, and the ground where the breakout took place at Acquino Aerodrome and Pontecorvo. B, D DAY5Anzio ( included). Today we look at the Battle of Anzio, seeing the US War Cemetery at Nettuno before having lunch in the seaside town of Anzio. After lunch we see the Anzio War Museum, Anzio War Cemetery and the Beachhead Cemetery, before travelleing via the infamous Flyover and Lateral Road out to the site of the Wadis. B, D DAY6Sangro & Ortona ( included). We head north today, travelling via the French Cemetery at Venafro before going up to the Sangro River. Here we see the Sangro Valley and Sangro War Cemetery. At Ortona we look at the story of the Canadians, seeing the Moro River War Cemetery and the excellent Ortona War Museum. Spending time in Ortona itself, we see original WW2 graffiti and a Sherman tank used by the Canadians. B, D DAY 7Volturno( included). On our final day we travel to the Volturno area, and see Minturno War Cemetery where the men who fell in the Volturno Crossing, and in the fighting at nearby Monte Camino are buried. In the afternoon we return to Cassino for free time in the town, and a final visit to the Cassino War Cemetery. B, D DAY8 We then return to Rome for our flight home to the UK.
